How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! (Isaiah 52:7)

May / June 2024

Dear Friends,

June 1st is Annual Meeting at the Mother Church in Boston.  Join us in the Reading Room to watch the live stream! We should be able to accommodate about 12 people in the study room. See more information below.

This issue features another fine article on how to pray about war.  It reminds us the power of individual prayer in the face of remote violence and despair.  The Reading Room computers are bookmarked with several articles on this subject.

From the Mary Baker Eddy Library there is a new podcast on Mrs. Eddy and animal magnetism.  From the Christian Science Monitor you can read about a clay studio dedicated to helping and healing our veterans.

The Asa Gilbert article is now available to read.  The copy is on the Librarian's desk. The cover art matches the image of the article on the wall nearby.

With love,

Andrea Hunter, Librarian

Brethren, our annual meeting is a grave guardian. It requires you to report progress, to refresh memory, to rejuvenate the branches and to vivify the buds, to bend upward the tendrils and to incline the vine towards the parent trunk. You come from feeding your flocks, big with promise; and you come with the sling of Israel’s chosen one to meet the Goliaths.
(My. 125:4)

THE INDIVIDUAL'S VITAL ROLE IN WORLD PEACE

ALFRED PITTMAN

From the November 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"...It is, of course, desirable that as many persons as possible should be thus praying for good government—thus recognizing the government of God. But what even one, any one, can accomplish in this way is by no means to be underrated. As in the ancient time, so today, one man can save a city..."

"Why did Mary Baker Eddy devote considerable attention in her writings to terms like animal magnetismmesmerismhypnotism, and electricity? Part of the reason was the prominence and popularity of these practices… Examining some of Eddy’s statements on these practices, our conversation elucidates why and how she addressed these practices in the language she chose and the stances she took."

How does this apply to us today?

Behind the potter’s wheel,
veterans work on healing

The former U.S. service members who participate in Odyssey’s Veterans Clay Program feel the good the studio is doing – from their places behind the potter’s wheel.

For 11 years now, military veterans and their families have been coming for a series of pottery classes that Mr. Kline offers free of charge. The classes help veterans heal or simply forge stronger ties in the city.

In 1915 Mary Beacher Longyear wrote an article for the Christian Science Monitor about Asa Gilbert Eddy.  She found that there was much misinformation about our Leader's husband and wished to set the record straight.
