How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! (Isaiah 52:7)

Reading Room Newsletter

MAY 2023

Dear Members and Friends,

Thank you for being readers of our newsletter.  When we started this effort we were told that 33% open rate was normal, or actually good.  Our newsletter gets over 70% each month. Last month it was 85%. We welcome feedback on how to make it even better.

Each day the Reading Room staff serves our church and the community.  We offer the Publishing Society's fine periodicals for sale. The pages are filled will current testimonies of healing and inspiration. Here is what our Leader says about  them...

Church Periodicals. Sect. 14. It shall be the privilege and duty of every member, who can afford it, to subscribe for the periodicals which are the organs of this Church; and it shall be the duty of the Directors to see that these periodicals are ably edited and kept abreast of the times.
(Man. 44:16)

We know that the Journal, Sentinel, Herald and Monitor are ongoing sources of support to our individual practice of Christian Science. We hope the links in the newsletter illustrate the value of these periodicals. We can't imagine a world without them.  Can you?

With love,
Andrea Hunter, Librarian
Hallie Keel, Asst. Librarian / Editor

How will I finish my paper?

by Susan Adams

When her writing assignment wasn’t coming together, this college student learned a spiritual lesson about where ideas come from.

excerpt: "As I drove, the word ego popped into my head. At first I didn’t make the connection. But as I thought about it, I realized that earlier that morning I’d been super confident that I had everything I needed to write a stellar paper—no prayer needed. "

Severe headaches and
swelling healed

Martin Vesely

In writing this testimony, it’s as though I’m recalling a dream, since, I’m grateful to say, the symptoms of illness left no impression on me. I do, however, feel it is important for me to document this healing in order to publicly give gratitude to God for it and acknowledge that Christian Science heals.

A little over two years ago, I began experiencing severe headaches, and later my head showed signs of swelling. One of the headaches lingered and, over time, became more painful and debilitating. I could sleep only out of exhaustion and ate very little for several weeks, although I did manage to fulfill most of my duties.

I was praying for myself during this time but stubbornly resisted calling a Christian Science practitioner for treatment when the condition did not quickly improve. I had rarely called a practitioner for help.

At times I thought about getting a medical diagnosis, but I never did, as I felt that would only increase my fear. I have always been confident that prayer is the most effective remedy for any challenge.

In the midst of intense discomfort, when it felt nearly impossible to give myself metaphysical treatment and I had started to fear that I was going to pass on, two things came to thought that countered the fear.

The first was Jesus’ response to his disciples when they told him that he must hurry to go to Lazarus, who was dying. Jesus confidently told them, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby” (John 11:4). I felt that this coming to my thought was God’s promise to me that I, too, would be healed.

The second thing that came strongly to thought was that no matter what happened, I could never be outside of God’s love and care. I could not go anywhere where God would not be with me. This took away the fear of death as well as the notion that death could release me from pain or illness.

Shortly after, I was persuaded to do what I should have done long before—I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful treatment. I felt immediate relief from the pain and swelling. Within a week or two I was completely healed. In the more than two years since, there has been no recurrence of the condition. I am deeply grateful.
